Welcome to the Women’s Portfolio for 2009! The Women’s Portfolio is a sub-group of the Sydney University Law Society which provides a forum to discuss the experiences of women in the law and aims to foster the development of female law students. It also provides a network to support female law students entering the legal profession.
The portfolio is generously sponsored again this year by Mallesons Stephen Jaques. We are very grateful for their support.
There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in the Women’s Portfolio for 2009:
YemayaThe Sydney University Law Society publishes an annual Women’s Journal; Yemaya. Yemaya is named after the African Yoruban, Afro-Brazilian and Afro-Carribbean Goddess of the Ocean. Now in its 4th year, Yemaya is a collection of essays, opinion pieces, short stories, poetry, interviews, photography, book reviews and original artworks that express and evaluate the ideas and experiences of women around the world. YEMAYA 2009 The 2009 edition of the journal will be launched this year by High Court Judge, Justice Virginia Bell on Monday 17 August at Mallesons Stephen Jaques. Women’s Mentoring ProgramNow in its sixth consecutive year, the Sydney University Law Society Women's Mentoring Program aims to develop a co-operative network to assist female law students. It involves pairing each female law student applicant with a mentor who works in an area of particular interest to the student. In the past, mentors have come from a variety of professional backgrounds and have worked as barristers, solicitors in corporate firms, solicitors in private practice, legal aid officers, legal academics and members of the Attorney-General’s Department. APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN Applications are now open for the 2009 Women's Mentoring Program. Interested students must be able to attend the program launch at Mallesons Stephen Jaques at 6pm on Monday, 17 August 2009. The program will be launched by High Court Judge, Justice Virginia Bell. There are no other compulsory time commitments and future meetings will be up to you to co-ordinate with your mentor.
