APPLICATIONS NOW OPEN FOR APPOINTED POSITIONS ON 2010 SULS EXECUTIVE Applications are now open for five appointed positions on the SULS 2010 Executive. The positions available include: - Equity Officer
- Design Officer
- IT Officer
- Queer Officer
- International Students Officer
This is an opportunity to be involved in the operation of one of the largest student societies on campus and to assist with our exciting plans for the new year. All interested students are encouraged to apply. The present SULS Executive will appoint students to the positions on the basis of merit. The students appointed to the five positions will be part of the SULS Executive, and will attend weekly meetings and participate in the broader work of the society in 2010. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 17 February. This date will be strictly enforced. 1. EQUITY OFFICER As per the SULS Constitution, the Equity Officer is responsible for: - Implementing and overseeing the Equity Grants policy
- Fostering an atmosphere of equal opportunity, equal access and equal representation
- Providing information about scholarships and grants available to law students
- Providing information about Sydney University Student Support Services
- Producing the Equity Handbook
In 2010, the Equity Officer will also have responsibility for: - Implementing the textbook grants scheme, established in 2009
- Working to raise awareness of depression as an issue affecting law students and the legal profession
- Working to provide support to law students suffering from anxiety and depression
- Working with the Vice-President Education on equity issues stemming from the proposed Juris Doctor (JD) course
2. IT OFFICER The Information Technology (IT) Officer is a crucial player within the SULS Executive. As per the SULS Constitution, the duties of the IT Officer include: - Maintaining the Society's website
- Managing the Society's mailing list
- Maintaining the Society's computer and telephone systems
- Providing technical support to the Executive in the fulfilment of its functions
The IT Officer should be continually looking for ways to improve communication between SULS, students and those who view the SULS website. The IT Officer's responsibilities are almost daily. Hence, the role requires someone who is reliable, and who has the capacity to respond to requests and problems in a timely manner. Applicants must also have solid experience and expertise in the area of website and email database management. The IT Officer, in cooperation with the rest of the SULS executive, will commence work immediately, before the beginning of semester. 3. DESIGN OFFICER The role of the Design Officer is to lay out and develop SULS' publicity material in 2010. This includes posters for events in each SULS portfolio, as well as official SULS documents. The Design Officer will also support the Publications Director with the design of all SULS publications. Applicants for this position should have a good working knowledge of design programs such as InDesign, Photoshop, Publisher and/or other applications. They must also be reliable and organised, so as to meet the ongoing publicity needs of the SULS Executive. 4. QUEER OFFICER The functions of the SULS Queer Officer are: - To plan forums that highlight the achievements of successful GLBT persons in the law and engage with areas of law relevant to GLBT persons
- To create and amass relevant publications and resources for GLBT students within the Law School and wider Usyd community
- To act as a grievance and support officer
- To represent SULS at intervarsity and University-wide events relating to GLBT persons
- To play a normative and symbolic role, re-asserting the importance of an equitable, diverse and accepting Law School that does not tolerate discrimination
Because Queer Officer is an executive position, applicants should be ready and willing to assist with other SULS portfolios, in addition to their own. INTERNTIONAL STUDENTS' OFFICER As per the SULS Constitution, the role of the International Students' Officer is to: - Create awareness of international students' needs within the law faculty
- Serve as a symbolic figure to international students in the law faculty
- Facilitate interactions between international students, domestic students and SULS programs
- Liaise with the law faculty, International Student Office, International Student Support Unit and Careers Centre on behalf of SULS in improving international students' situations by:
- Playing a supportive role to international students requiring reasonable personal, academic and social assistance
- Providing administrative information and/or services to international students
- Organising networking, educational and career-orientated events
- Publishing the International Students Handbook (Law Faculty)
- Publishing an annual report to be handed to the incoming SULS Executive and law faculty outlining developments in the ISO role for the relevant year
Applicants should have an appreciation of the serious issues facing international students within the law faculty, and a strong and selfless desire to use their position on SULS for the benefit of international students generally. Applicants should also have strong communication skills, and a level of maturity that will enable them to form good, professional relationships with relevant faculty staff. For at least the first part of 2010, the ISO will be supervised by Olivia Teh, who instituted the position in 2009.
