The JD transfer will almost certainly receive final approval at the university level in the Senate. STUDENT SUBMISSION BY CATRINA YU - "WHAT IS IN A NAME?" HAVE YOU ALWAYS WONDERED WHO THESE JUDGES REALLY WERE?</h1> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">A name can be seen as merely a label, a point of identification serving only a utilitarian purpose for convenience and practicality. Yet, to believe this would overlook the overwhelming power of rhetoric. The age old maxim that sticks and stones may break my bones but words will never hurt me seems to border on the naive. Surely, given the primacy contemporary culture gives to oration, information and communication, a name in itself possesses the potential to deliver a potent effect over power relations within society. For example, and this is merely speculation, but if Superman's real name was not Clarke Kent and was, say Neville Longbottom, would the imaginations of millions of children be as easily enamoured?</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">A last name of Yu hardly induces visions of grandeur. Besides being a great platform for puns and potential year twelve jersey names, its utility in inciting irreverence in those who read it is, well, unfortunately negligible. Upon delving into the names of the judicial world however, a name that has always commanded my attention has been Lord Wilberforce. Now there is a name to be reckoned with. Sure, you have Kirby and Denning but surely, a name like Wilberforce automatically commands the gravitas that a lesser name would take years to build. A descendant of the famous abolitionist William Wilberforce, Lord Wilberforce was brought up in India and educated at Oxford where he read classics. Famous for developing the Anns test, he contributed considerably to the fields of public international law, commercial and administrative law.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Whilst his name conjures up an image of a strong, buff, severe character, in reality, Wilberforce was a lean figure in pale-rimmed spectacles - adopting for the atypical 'professor look'. He had a connoisseur's palate for wine and his love for opera led to him being an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Music.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">My initial assumptions as to what type of character Lord Wilberforce was definitely challenged by the reality of his existence. My somewhat childish imaginations of a super-hero figure that ruled over the English courts with pomp and ceremony were somewhat dampened by his conservative judgments... not to take anything away from the man's brilliance. And yet, I still continue to read his judgments with an irreverence that is largely conjured by his name.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">We rarely take a moment to reflect on the people that wrote the judgments that the study of the common law require us to decipher. We analyse their words and try and follow their reasoning, but never really pay much attention to the judicial heavyweights themselves. Election Information Evening and Announcement of Electoral Officer

<p style="margin: 1em 0;">Dear Members,</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">This year's SULS Elections will be held in Week 11 (with exact dates to be announced by the Electoral Officer closer to the date).</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">Before nominations for these elections open, we would like to invite all interested SULS members to attend an Information Evening next Monday the 30th of August at 6pm in Seminar Room 020 of the New Law School.</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">The purpose of this meeting is to explain how the electoral process will occur and also to explain the role of each position on the SULS Executive. If you are at all interested in putting yourself forward for election it is strongly recommended you attend this meeting, as it will be a chance to meet with current members of the Executive to chat about their experiences and also other students who are interested in running for election. The meeting should not take longer than one hour and please feel free to drop in for just a short while if you have other commitments.</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">We would also like to announce that this year Chris Parkin has been appointed as Electoral Officer. Chris will be present at the Information Evening on Monday to answer any questions you may have. Special General Meeting: Electoral Regulation Proposal

<p style="margin: 1em 0;">Dear SULS Members,</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">Further to our earlier email, on Monday the 23rd of August (from 1-2pm in Seminar Room 105 of the New Law School) we will be holding a Special General Meeting to vote upon proposed changes to the Electoral Regulations contained in the SULS Constitution.</p> <p style="margin: 1em 0;">In an effort to make the changes as seamless and comprehensive as possible, we would encourage anyone interested in attending the meeting to consider the attached document which sets out the proposal that will be considered at the meeting. You can't even trust your own friends anymore - they could betray you at any moment by bombarding your Facebook with an endless stream of messages about the Friday guest list at SOHO. Facebook will never be a haven of witty wall posts and casual stalking again, as you are now faced with the dilemma of whether your real-life friendship would survive if you were to block them in the cyber world. (Then again, should you really be that stressed over a friendship with a guy in his mid-twenties who frequents the same nightclubs as underage schoolgirls?)</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">You might be thinking this is a bit rich coming from someone who was once employed in a promotional capacity. Indeed, I would like to take this opportunity to apologize from the depth of my heart for the strain I placed upon our society during that dark time. But having seen the industry at work first-hand, I have seen just how fragile it is in its dependence upon the consumer. So I come before you with a proposal - that we stand together to fight for freedom from the tyranny of those who have ever tried to shove a pamphlet into our already-overloaded hands, or made us question our self-worth when we realize they're only talking to us because someone is paying them.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">No generation is more in need of liberation from this tyranny than our own. It's a wonder it's taken us this long to rebel, since we've put up with the harassment of marketers since we were embryotic, the Herald Sun describing us as "the first generation to have been in the sights of advertisers while in the womb."</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Our generation definitely possesses the tools to launch an effective resistance against the promoter; having been raised on a steady diet of search engines and wiki pages that could quite possibly have been written by your Alzeihmic next-door neighbour, discernment between the factual and the unreliable is one of our most natural instincts. So why have we allowed the promoter's species to reproduce and multiply at such a rapid pace? Is it that deep down, we actually want to be marketed to? As a self-confessed material generation, we'll usually listen-up when someone's raving about something we ain't got (unless of course, it's not Apple brand). Or is it that this latest sub-species of face-to-face promoters has found the chink in our armor: we've spent so much time practicing our powers of discernment against any information-generating authority, that we don't know what to do when faced with a real-life human being on a street corner appealing to us with a personal testimony of their experiences.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Whatever the cause, I appeal to you to now to bring that Gen-Y fraud-filter of yours onto the street. With a united front we can put the promoter out of business. I don't want my children, or children's children, or children's parents, to fear the motives of any passer-by that asks them for the time. The program has now been extended to include anthropology and some social science students and graduates. Blake Dawson Developing Young Lawyers (DYL) Workshop Series - DATE CHANGE</h2> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The DYL series is designed to help students develop many of the skills needed to be a successful lawyer. This incorporates workshops that focus on client interviewing, negotiation and mooting skills. The series aims to provide students with methods, hints and tips in these areas, as well as the opportunity to participate in practical scenarios and receive feedback from Blake Dawson lawyers. The workshop is run by a Blake Dawson Partner who shares their real life experience with negotiation. The session is run by a Blake Dawson Partner who provides guidance on how to conduct a client interview. There is a demonstration by Blake Dawson lawyers and students will have the opportunity to participate in role play scenarios and receive personalised feedback from the Blake Dawson lawyers they are working with.</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Mooting</p> <p style="margin: 1em; padding: 0; font-size: 10pt; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The mooting workshop offers an understanding of core mooting skills and an opportunity to put these into practice. The workshop starts with a general discussion of the principles of mooting, including advice on what you should and should not do during a moot. Participants then move into breakout rooms to moot a hypothetical legal problem with other students who have a similar level of experience. <p style="margin: 1em;">Dear Student,</p> <p style="margin: 1em;">In 2010, SULS is committed to addressing anxiety and depression at Sydney Law School. In line with this commitment, SULS is entering a team of students and staff members in the Sun Herald City2Surf in support of <em>beyondblue</em>.</p> <p style="margin: 1em;"><strong>What is <em>beyondblue</em>?</strong></p> <p style="margin: 1em;"><em>beyondblue </em>is a national, non-profit, government organisation working to address issues associated with mental health problems, particularly depression and anxiety. The organisation's main goals are to raise awareness and reduce the stigma associated with mental illness.</p> <p style="margin: 1em;"><strong>Why is this important for law students?</strong></p> <p style="margin: 1em;">Depression will directly or indirectly affect law students at some point in their academic lives. A study undertaken by the Australian Law Students' Association found that Australia wide, approximately 1 in 5 females and 1 in 8 males suffer from depression. Amongst law students, the incidence is much higher, with approximately 41% of students suffering from psychological distress severe enough to warrant clinical assessment.</p> <p style="margin: 1em;"><strong>How can you help?</strong></p> <p style="margin: 1em;">115 of our students and staff members are running or walking the City2Surf this year in support of <em>beyondblue</em>.
