Competitions FAQ

What do I wear?

All in person and zoom rounds: Business Attire

Where/when are the rounds?

The rounds are held from 5-8 Mondays-Thursdays. Some select rounds will be held at lunchtimes, between 11:30-2:30pm. Preliminary rounds will be hosted online through zoom whereas final rounds will be held in person in various locations. Check your draw to see where final rounds will be held.

What should I do to be prepared?

Attend the Intro to Comps Week and the Introductory Programs, which are run at the start of each semester for Mooting, Negotiations, Client Interviewing. Also, make sure to read the 2023 Competitions Handbook for more details on how a competition works, as well as handy tips and tricks!

When do I receive the problem?

We generally send out problem questions for moots a week in advance.

For other competitions, this will depend on the timeline. For example, for witness examinations, the problem question is only released 24 hours in advance.

What happens if my partner (or the other team) withdraws from the moot?

Moots: In most cases, the moot will continue exactly as planned. You will not have to present the arguments that your partner has chosen. Similarly, moots can continue even if the other team has withdrawn. Judges will simply listen to your side and the moot will end early. All moots are judged on an individual basis. The only exception is the First Year Moot, where a withdrawal of one member will disqualify the team.

Negotiations and Client Interviewing: Because these are teams of 2, a withdrawal will disqualify the team.

How will I be contacted?

We will email you frequently, so please check your emails constantly. We will send you the draw for the entire round, and it will tell you your location, round time and date, and opposing side. We will also send you the moot problem(s).

What can I take into the moot?

Written submissions, water, writing materials, laptop, stopwatch, and competition rules.

Will the rooms be set up?

Rounds held in person will be set up by the convenors beforehand.

What if I cannot attend a round?

Please ensure you attend each round on time. If you cannot attend, please notify the convenors or competitions directors as soon as possible. If there is an emergency, please let us know so we can contact the opposing team and the judge(s). If you cannot attend a scheduled please notify us in advance so that we may reschedule your round, but only if resources permit it.
