Publications has often been perceived as exclusive and intimidating at SULS, as many people are afraid that their work is not ‘up to par’ or feel they will not receive support during the writing process. In 2024, we will make publications accessible to more students by providing opportunities for more informal contributions on our new website, whilst reinforcing the academic rigour of our current journals. We want students from all walks of life to feel that they have a platform to explore creative outlets and critically analyse and debate law and public policy. Most importantly, we want to recognise students for their efforts, and develop their skills and expertise as today’s informed citizens and tomorrow’s leaders.
If you are interested in getting involved with publications, applying for an editorial board, submitting an abstract for a journal or writing a post for our blog, please contact the Publications Director at publications@suls.org.au for more information.

What is ableism? What is disability? How do we talk about disability? The Disabilities Media Guide (‘Ableism 101’) is here to help, providing a helpful introduction to disability & anti-ableism in general — particularly for people who wish to write and talk about disability.
Language and media representation can have the potential to perpetuate stigma and ableist assumptions. The purpose of this guide is to help destigmatise disability and to facilitate dialogue & discourse which is more inclusive towards the disability sector.
Although published by SULS, this publication is an intervarsity collaboration which builds upon the work of the Melbourne University Law Students’ Society (‘MULSS’) and will be periodically updated, in response to emergent needs including those reported by the Law Student Society (‘LSS’) & Law Student Association (‘LSA’) members of the Intervarsity Disability Network.
Please contact disabilities@suls.org.au or publications@suls.org.au for more information.

Blackacre is the yearbook dedicated exclusively to final year students. It provides graduating students with a way of capturing their time at Law School and serve as a memento for the future. It is a valuable written record of the thoughts, feelings and experiences of final year students, which can then be shared with fellow graduates. It was first published in 1937 and has a significant history of featuring the writings and photos of some of Australia’s most prominent academics, politicians, lawyers and judges.
The 2023 Blackacre Yearbook can be found here.
Dissent is the Sydney University Law Society’s annual social justice journal, and provides an important opportunity for students to have their work published on a range of social justice issues related to both domestic and international law. It also encourages students to undertake research into controversial or little-known areas that may go well beyond the scope of their ordinary coursework.
Each year the journal is centred around a particular theme, which contributors then draw inspiration from in crafting a submission. These range in form from scholastic essays to opinion pieces and even creative works. Entries from students and staff, both within and outside the Law School, are encouraged.
If you have any questions about Dissent, please contact the Editor-in-Chief at dissent@suls.org.au or the VP (Social Justice) at socialjustice@suls.org.au.

Law in Society intends to mirror a deposition of a different kind, one that deconstructs the law and the processes of critique, whether that be elucidating a state of affairs or applying it to better a particular aspect of our legal system. How so? Law in Society is a chronology of critique. We are curious about deconstructing not only the law but the processes of critique that underpin every aspect of society.
The 2023 Law in Society can be found here.
