Law in Foreign Lands: China and U.S

This event will broaden your legal education and provide you with an understanding of the foreign legal jurisdictions of two of the world's powerful states: China and the United States.

What is the Chinese legal system? How does it operate? Is it Socialist?
What is the nexus between Australian and US law? Is the US legal system under threat? How will it be affected by the 2020 Presidential election?

To answer these questions and more, you will hear from the following speakers:

Dr Colin Hawes is from the Australia China Relations Institute and an Associate Professor in the Law Faculty at UTS. He has been invited by leading international universities to teach and conduct research, including Oxford University (UK). He has published numerous articles on Chinese law, Chinese corporate governance and obtained his PhD at the University of British Columbia.

Professor Simon Jackman is the CEO of the United States Studies Centre (USSC). Professor Jackman served as an expert witness helping to secure the first successful legal challenges to partisan gerrymandering in the United States, which are now before the Supreme Court of the US. As CEO, the USSC has hosted a range of guests from Vice-President Joe Biden, Bob Hawke and Julie Bishop.
